The Giving Tree, supporting the youth of Valley City, ND
To the Community of Barnes County,
Imagine yourself as a toddler, a 7-8 year old, a teenager, what did you do? Where did you go? Who did you spend your time with? Now take the time to look around our community, and what do you see? I see one movie theater, a teen center (only open during special dances), a public library, some restaurants, a few local stores to shop at, and a few local parks. If you put two and two together you’ll notice that there isn’t a whole lot to do for the youth in our town. We can change all that though by putting our resources together into making our public library a place where they can feel free to hang out, learn, and feel accepted.
Currently the Valley City Barnes County Public Library is going through some wonderful changes to help serve the youth of our community. VCBC Public Library will be doing this by adding a youth section for our young adult readers, adding a lap sit story time for parents/caregivers and their infants, and adding new programs each month. The library is also putting together a Teen Advisory Board to help get teens involved in the community, and to know what they would like to see take place in the library. The library programs that are being added aren’t just going to occur during story time and will be for all ages. One of the goals the library has for adding these programs is to get more youth involved in the library and the community. It is also a goal for the youth to be educated outside of school in a fun environment. VCBC Public Library also wants to update the collection and technology so that the youth can be current and keep updated easily.
As local and state funding start to decrease, the library has to relay on donations, fundraisers, and grants to get the support it needs to run the library. This is the time when our community needs to rally together to help support the Valley City Barnes County Public Library and our youth. VCBC Public Library does many fundraisers throughout the year, like the salad luncheons, “chocolate, chocolate” day, occasional book sales, and also the “Rally in the Valley” caramel roll sale. While all these fundraisers help the library, only a small portion can be given to just the youth department.
In this Holiday season, I encourage you to take time and go to the library and check out their giving tree. The giving tree is located in the Mary E. Fischer room and to give back to the library, there will be ornaments with materials, products, or money the library needs printed on them and you can just pick one that suits your budget and donate whatever your ornament says to the library and hang it on the tree. The tree will be up until New Year’s Eve, where the staff, volunteers, and friends of the library will host a party, at the library, to help celebrate all those who donated. So if you’re feeling the Holiday Spirit this season and want to support the library and the youth of our community, head down to the VCBC Public Library Located on Central Ave and buy an ornament!
